Update from a Power BI Template App

In this article will demonstrate how to update reports from a our Power BI template app. If newer reports are available you will see an indicator in your workspace and get a notification from us at tyGraph. Only follow this path ifyou

Keep in mind: You will require a Power BI Pro License to follow this guide. Be sure to backup any custom layouts you love. How do I tell if I have Power BI Pro?

If you have a Power BI free License, you will need to load our reports from a Power BI desktop model file (pbix) file. Please see this article: Updating Reports with a PBIX File

We will be doing most of our work in the Power BI service. Please open your browser and log in to

Here are the general steps we will follow:

Step 1: Backup Old Reports

As much as it's tempting to hit the "Get it now" button. If you have edited report layouts, you will want to rename them so the update does not replace them. Anything with the default name will essentially be dropped and replaced. At the very least I usually screenshot the old report layouts that I care about.

Note: If you're constantly scared of losing your precious custom layouts. Check out our article on "Editing Unleashed with Live Connected Reports"

Also keep in mind that any attribute names that were changed from the old version will cause those old visuals to break. For example we recently clarified the "Location" attribute to say "User Location." After the update you will need to go in and update any visuals that used that attribute and add in the newly named attribute. For details skip to the

Be sure to re-name old reports that you would like to keep by prefixing them with the term - OLD. Essentially make sure there's nothing with the new default name that could be replaced ie. "tyGraph for Teams" etc.

Step 2: Load New App

Once you are sure you have any customized report layouts recorded/saved off. We can proceed to update.

  1. Click Get data
  2. Services "get"
  3. Search
  4. Select App.
  5. Click Get it now (this is where you start if you clicked the ribbon)
  6. Select "Overwrite an existing version" Dataset (unless you want to install entirely new & separate workspace)
  7. Choose correct workspace
  8. Press Install

Step 3: Refresh & Cleanup

Observe the Refresh

From here you can watch the template app update the default content in the workspace. The template app will then automatically initiate a refresh for the dataset to fill the new dataset/report with your own data. We recommend you go and grab lunch or a coffee while it does this automatically. It usually takes 2 minutes to update the workspace, then it refreshes the dataset which depending on the size of your company could take 5-20 minutes.

If you make notice your own data isn't loaded check the parameters set by the update:
If you make any changes to these parameters, remember to go back to the workspace and initiate a refresh in the moment to force it to pull in the changes you just applied. If you notice that the

Sort out any Dead Visuals

If you kept old report that had visuals on attributes that were renamed then you will see this message as the old visuals can't find that element in the new dataset. Example below. There is no need to worry simply edit the visual and add in the newly named visual.

For example recently "Location" was changed to become "User Location" which you will need to re-associate in visuals. For a full guide see this article: Re-Pointing Visuals After Update : Support (

This is also a good time to clear out old visuals and delete reports that clutter your workspace and are no longer used.
