This article will demonstrate how to update reports from our Power BI template app. If newer reports are available, you will see an indicator in your workspace or in the notifications area.
However, sometimes the notification does not show but you can still update existing workspaces. If you have customized reports and want to back them up, please start at Step 1, otherwise skip to Step 2.
Keep in mind: You will require a Power BI Pro License to follow this guide. Be sure to back up any custom layouts you love. How do I tell if I have Power BI Pro?
If you have a Power BI FREE License, you will need to load our reports from a Power BI desktop model file (pbix) file. Please see this article: Updating Reports with a PBIX File
We will be doing most of our work in the Power BI service. Please open your browser and log in to https://powerbi.microsoft.com
Steps
Here are the general steps we will follow:
Step 1: Backup Old Reports
Only follow this step if you have customized the tyGraph report and you want to retain your changes. Otherwise, skip to Step 2.
As much as it's tempting to hit the "Get it now" button. If you have edited report layouts in the default Report, you will want to rename them, so the update does not replace them. Anything with the default name will essentially be dropped and replaced. At the very least you can screenshot the old report layouts that you care about and recreate them after the update. The Out of the Box default objects are outlined below.
Note: If you're constantly scared of losing your precious custom layouts. Check out our article on "Deploying Live Connected Reports"
Also keep in mind that any attribute names that were changed from the old version will cause those old visuals to break. For example, we recently renamed the "Location" attribute to say, "User Location." After the update you will need to update any visuals in customized reports that used that attribute and replace with the newly named attribute.
If you would like to keep the old Out of the Box report because you've customized it, simply rename it by postfixing with the term - OLD for example.
Step 2: Load New App
Once you are sure you have any customized report layouts recorded/saved off. We can proceed to update.
If you have a notification in the Notification Centre, you can proceed to click the "Get it" link for the desired application.
Or, if you have a banner at the top of your workspace with the "Get it now" button, you can click it now.
Sometimes these notifications do not appear and you have to go to the Apps section to force the update.
- Click "Apps" in the Left navigation menu.
- Click "Get apps" in the top right hand corner.
- Search for tyGraph under Template apps and click on the appropriate app you want to install.
- Click "Get it now" and Confirm to continue.
- Select "Update the workspace and the app" (unless you want to install an entirely new & separate workspace). If you have multiple installed workspaces for the same product, you will see a dropdown to choose which workspace to update. You will notice a version number to indicate which version the current workspace is installed with.
- Press Install
Step 3: Refresh & Cleanup
Observe the Refresh
From here you can watch the template app update the default content in the workspace. The template app will then automatically initiate a refresh for the dataset to fill the new dataset/report with your own data. We recommend you go and grab lunch or a coffee while it does this automatically. It usually takes a few minutes to update the workspace, then a few minutes to an hour to refresh the dataset, which depending on the size of your organization.
If you notice your own data isn't loaded, check the semantic model parameters:
If you make any changes to these parameters, remember to go back to the workspace and initiate a refresh in the moment to force it to pull in the changes you just applied.
Sort out any Dead Visuals
If you kept old report that had visuals on attributes that were renamed, then you will see this message as the old visuals can't find that element in the new dataset. There is no need to worry simply edit the visual and add in the newly named visual.
For example, recently "Location" was changed to become "User Location" which you will need to re-associate in visuals. For a full guide see this article: Re-Pointing Visuals After Update : Support (tygraph.com)
This is also a good time to clear out old visuals and delete reports that clutter your workspace and are no longer used.
Couldn't overwrite the app
If you get this error while updating your workspace, please follow the steps below.
- Unpublish your app
- Get the latest update by clicking the "Get it now" button in the workspace.
- Ensure your dataset is connected and refreshed with your data.
- Re-publish your app by clicking on the Create App button.
