In SharePoint you can click the send by email on a news article. This will send the user a generated invitation to the Page or Article.
User Perspective
The user will receive an email that looks like this:
When the user clicks the url it will track the directing url as being from an email. If you just send out a url in an email then it will be tracked as the user viewed the page directly (with no referral). Which is not the whole story.
